The Charleston metro area consists of three major Counties, Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester. Locals refer to it as the Lowcountry. Many visitors say it is this ambiance that draws thousands to Charleston every year. Hauntingly beautiful is perhaps the best way to describe South Carolina's Lowcountry and Resort Islands.

Dorchester and Berkeley Counties were born as a result of their respective rivers that feed into the Charleston harbor. Dorchester County was developed along the Ashley River from the people that settled here as far back as the 1600's. General George Washinton led Armies in Dorchester County.

Berkeley County has the Cooper River. The Cooper River snakes through the cities of North Charleston and Goose Creek. Berkeley County hosted the Swamp Fox himself, Francis Marion and is home to the infamous "Goose Creek Men" - a militia group instrumental in the Amercian Revolutionary War. The real beauty of this area must be seen to be appreciated.

Of course Charleston County has miles of white beaches washed clean by the tide - free of tracks except those left by a hermit crab or sea turtle, endless marshes alive with the calls of birds and rustling flight, and trees laden with Spanish moss add to its ethereal setting.
